Wines of the Week

Mas de Guiot Cabernet Syrah 2004
Guiot Your Motor Running

On the western banks of the old course of the Rhône River lies the appellation of Costiéres de Nîmes (“coasts of Nîmes”). There, Sylvia Cornut crafts this blend of 60% Cabernet and 40% Syrah. Wine guru Robert Parker reviews it every year, except in 2004. “Superb” he gushes, with “gorgeous aromas of kirsch liqueur intermixed with melted licorice and camphor ... this voluptuously-styled (insert vintage here) is impossible to resist.” - RH

On Sale at $9.96
FOR TWO WEEKS, thru 10/08/07
Regularly $14.99
Open for tasting all week

Domaine Des Chezelles Touraine Blanc 2006

All Touraine Vehicle

On the “sonny” banks of the Cher River in the heart of France’s Loire Valley, Alain Marcadet crafted this vibrant Sauvignon Blanc that many a vigneron from Sancerre or Pouilly Fumé would love to call their own. A medium body and zesty attack on the palate follow an exuberant nose of fresh cut grass, lemon grass, spearmint, tangerine peel, lime, honeysuckle, and gooseberries. The flavors bounce around a fantastic crisp structure and a zippy finish. - RH

On Sale $7.96

Free Wine Tastings

Downtown, Friday, September 28th 5-7:30 PM

Rock Rabbit Sauvignon Blanc 2005 - $9.99
(94% Sauvignon Blanc, 6% Gewürztraminer; Sonoma, California)
Winemaker Alan Cose describes it perfectly, alluding to his brilliant idea of adding a bit of highly aromatic Gewürztraminer to the Sauvignon Blanc. "A summer sipping, hammock swinging wine ... it doesn't taste like anything else out there. Grapefruit, melon, white peach, and honeysuckle flavors. Clean, refreshing texture. A splash of Gewürztraminer, yeah, that's where the faith comes into play. Why didn't I think of it before?" Try with fresh basil & tomatoes. - RH

Root: 1 Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - $11.99
(Sauvignon Blanc; Casablanca Valley, Chile)
"The Casablanca Valley is the source for this outstanding blanca de la casa. The story of Root:1 is that all the fruit is grown on ungrafted vines. Phylloxera has not stricken Chile like it has France, California and most other areas of the world, so grafting onto native resistant rootstock is uncommon there. Does that make the wine more pure? Not necessarily, but it makes for good wine conversation. A lot of us are tired of Chardonnay ... We want to be refreshed, reinvigorated with something new. We want something good and expressive, and we don't want to spend too much. Importer Click Wine Group has done it again with this fresh and edgy wild white that rivals the best of France for a meager price." - Jerry Hall http://volunteer.blogs.com/winewaves/

Les Hauts de la Brune Coteaux du Languedoc 2005 - $8.99
(80% Syrah, 10% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre; Languedoc, France)
This decade-long wineshop favorite is a stunning bargain. The Washington Post says: "No one will suspect you paid so little for this deep ruby, full-flavored red from the Côteaux du Languedoc of southern France. Syrah provides the full-throttle berry fruit that everyone loves, but it's the old vines Grenache that provides the earthy, new leather and wild herbs notes that will keep connoisseurs on a budget coming back for more." - RH

Domaine Comte Louis de Clermont-Tonnerre "La Bérardière" Côtes-du-Rhône 2005 - $11.99
(Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault; Côteaux du Tricastin, France)
In 2004 Clermont-Tonnerre produced a Côtes du Rhône blended from 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 10% Cinsault. The fruit comes from a very-old-vine parcel known as la Bérardière; the extensive vine age is apparent from first whiff of this mineral-infused beauty. Bottled unfined and unfiltered at the request of importer Alain Corcia (known for exquisite Burgundy), this red offers refinement and style rarely seen in a simple Côtes du Rhône. Enjoy it now and over the next five years with hearty, robust fare such as grilled pork chops or lasagna with a rich meat ragú. - RH

Château Guiot Costières de Nîmes Numa 2004 - Normally 19.99 / Now on Sale for $11.96
(100% Syrah; Nîmes, France)
"The bigger, richer 2004 Numa is a real sleeper. Notes of camphor are intermixed with blueberry, blackberry, and concentrated fruit in a full-bodied, rich wine with excellent texture and a long, heady finish. It should drink well for 4-5 years. 90 pts" - Robert Parker

From the Downtown Beer Room

Olde Richmond #11
Eleventh Hops Heaven
The brewers at Olde Richmond Brewing Company take their role as Richmond brewers very seriously. They mark their participation in a tradition that goes back to such anti-bellum brewers as Hays and Forrester, Richard Whitfield, John Clendening, and Calvin Brooks. (Yeah, I know. I've never heard of them either.) These brewers brewed in small batches that they numbered to be able to tell apart. Thus the numbering homage by Olde Richmond. Contract brewed by St. George Brewery in Hampton, VA, Olde Richmond's Batch #11 is their India Pale Ale and the best beer of theirs we've tasted so far. "Bright" is the word here ... a bright hops bitterness dancing around a bright malt center. This beer might give Tupper's Hop Pock a run for its money. That's one race I'd like to see. - caj

Currently selling for $3.99/6P

Stone 11th Anniversary Ale

Join the Dark Side
Get your bitter buds ready, because this beer goes down that road. For their 10th Anniversary Ale, Stone played with hops. For their 11th Anniversary Ale, they've done it again. This time they've gone the unorthodox route of taking a stout and hopping it up. An IPA stout? Roast with hops? Hard to wrap your mind around, it must be tasted to be believed. Not as much an IPA as a strong bitter, this beer packs a wallop! - caj
