Friday Night Tasting July 6, 2012

Seven Hills Riesling 2011 - $13.99

Tasting price $12.59

(100% Riesling; Columbia Valley, Washington)

"Made in a Kabinett style with 10.9% alcohol, 1.8% residual sugar and plenty of natural acidity. Aromas of mineral, citrus, and spring flowers inform the nose of a crisp, refreshing wine that is ideal for use as an aperitif." - Jay Miller (Wine advocate)

Hillinger First Hill 2011 -$12.99

Tasting Price $11.69

(70% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Welschriesling, 10% Gruner Veltliner; Burgenland, Austria)

A new wine from one of our favourite producers.

“I do not want an interchangeable fashionable wine, rather I want to produce a truly Austrian, if not Burgenlandian top-quality wine. Making wine is for me a source of happiness. It combines hobby with vocation. I cannot imagine anything more beautiful. When the grape is excellent, then one has much less to do in the cellar. From years of experience and much-experimenting, I know that the fruit needs to be perfect and bottled without alteration.” - Leo Hillinger

Joel Gott Riesling 2010 - $13.99

Tasting Price $12.59

(100% Riesling; Columbia Valley, Washington)

The 2010 Joel Gott Riesling has aromas of honeysuckle, stone fruit, mango and citrus. The fruit aromas carry over to the palate, and the wine enters bright and juicy. The balance of acidity and the low alcohol give the wine a pleasant finish. - Joel Gott

Goats Du Roam Rosé 2011 - $9.99

Tasting Price $8.99

(46% Syrah, 25% Mourvedre, 15% Grenache, 14% Gamay; Paarl and Swartland, South Africa)

The grapes were harvested from vineyards in the Paarl and Swartland regions. Although rosé is often seen as being fun and easy drinking, it can be one of the more rewarding wines to make. It is a labour intensive wine when made in the traditional saignée method, with the various components and the final blending requiring a lot individual attention. This particular rosé has a deep, vibrant colour, with aromas of strawberries and red fruits. The palate shows zesty ripe fruit, with a clean, crisp dry finish.

Monte Oton 2010 - $7.99

Tasting Price $7.19

(100% Garnacha; Borja, Spain)

Bodegas Borsao lies west of Zaragoza in Spain’s Campo di Borja wine region. Vineyards for their Monte Oton bottling sit high on the sunny, windswept slopes of the extinct volcano, Moncayo. This is ideal for harvesting fully ripened Garnacha (aka Grenache) grapes. Smooth juicy, it shows engaging red berry fruit both in the nose & in the ripe, plump palate. A smashing picnic & BBQ red.
