Grape University, Wine Wednesday 106.1

Every Wednesday, owner Robert Harllee talks with Jeff Sweatman about all things wine on The Corner 106.1 radio station. The piece airs between 4:00 and 4:30 pm. For your convenience, and driving safety, we post a list of the wines discussed here. Click the link above to listen to the podcast of this and past discussions. Grape University: Pinot Gris aka Pinot Grigio

6/20/12

The major regions growing Pinot Gris/Grigio are Alsace in France, northern Italy (particularly the Veneto, Friuli, Collio, Alto Adige, Trentino, and more), Oregon, and New Zealand. Minor regions are Australia, California, and Austria. Pinot Gris originated in Burgundy, France along with its close sibling Pinot Noir. (It is historically one of the five white grapes of Burgundy: Chardonnay, Aligote, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Melon de Bourgogne aka Muscadet.) In Germany it is called Grauburgunder. In all three languages, French, Italian, and German, it translates to the gray Pinot/burgundy grape. Wines labeled Pinot Grigio are typically lighter, crisper and more minerally. Wines labeled Pinot Gris are typically richer, with more depth of fruit, more concentrated on the palate. But there is a lot of overlap, and no stylisitc guarantees.
