On Italy’s eastern Adriatic Coast just north of Ancona a lone mountain rises suddenly to 1700 feet—the striking Monte Conero. Luca Lanari and his wife Paola artisanally crafted this classic blend of 90% Montepulciano and 10% Sangiovese inland from there on rolling hills of the town of Varano. I love its cherry, currant and plum flavors with leather and fresh herb notes, and its finish of ripe tannins.
