Duck Rabbit Baltic Porter 6P - Regularly $13.99

Is it a rabbit? A duck? Such is the visual conundrum in the logo of Farmville, NC’s Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery. Their Baltic Porter is also a puzzle. It’s got the body of a Baltic Porter but it’s got the chocolate and roast notes of a stout. There’s the Baltic sourness on the finish but all this complexity before. Is it fish or fur? Dunno. It is fine, though.

Left Hand Milk Stout 6P - Regularly $10.99

You don’t add milk to milk stouts. You add lactose. Beer yeasts won’t digest it, you see. So you can make your stout sweet. Left Hand’s Milk Stout has Pale, 2-row, Crystal, Munich, Roast Barley, Flaked Oats, Flaked Barley and Chocolate malts to give it a roasty chocolate taste, lightly hopped with Magnum and US Goldings. It ends with a slighty sweet, creamy finish.

New Holland Cabin Fever Brown Ale 6P - Regularly $10.49

Holland, Michigan is right off the lake, just south of state center, so they know about being snowed in. The Cabin Fever Brown Ale features roasted malts most prominantly, but there’s so much more going on. Rye, caramel, raisin, even vanilla notes float around the edges all sitting on a bed of spicy hops. It’s the tastiest “lake effect” you could wish for.

Lagunitas The CENSORED Rich Copper Ale 6P |
Ya’ Got Me Copper!

Lagunitas’ “The Kronik **CENSORED** Rich Copper Ale” has a name that they’re not allowed to use but a taste that makes you pause for the cause. This is one the few malt-prominent beers made by the hop heads from Petaluma. Bready, dark, crystal malts are rolled up in a colorful wrapper of hops. This beer is what amber ales dream about growing up to be.

Smuttynose Robust Porter 6P |
|
Robustin’ Out

Smuttynose Brewing Company in Portsmouth, NH puts out some good beers. Their Robust Porter is one of their tastiest. It aims itself at the traditional London porter style - a coffee/chocolaty taste from a handful of five malts. Then right at the finish there’s a flash of America in a small kick of Cascade hops. This brew was a gold medal winner at the 2010 Mondial de la Beire.

Saving the Best for Now

Where many brewers have brown ales in their regular line up, Bell’s Brewing Company in Kalamazoo, MI saves this great brew for release as a fall/winter seasonal.
