Beer
"HefeRichmondbier"

Legend Hefeweizen 6P - $9.99

For their Hefeweizen (unfiltered wheat beer originally from Bavaria), Richmond’s Legend Brewing Co. mostly follows tradition while nudging things for American tastes. Ignoring the 50/50 rule, they go with 60 % Pilsner Barley malt and 40% wheat malt. They hop it with a healthy dose of Saaz hops (for a tiny zing!) and ferment with a genuine German weizen yeast strain. It’s that Bavarian weissbier taste with a little stateside lean.

"Beauty and the Beast"

Devils Backbone Azrael - $10.99

What if the Angel of Death were blonde, comely, and just a little spicy? You’d name a beer after her, right? Well, if you’re Devils Backbone you would. The Azrael is their Belgian style golden ale. It takes restrained malts (Weyermann Bohemian Pilsner, CMC Pilsner, Weyermann Acidulated, and flaked wheat malts), ferments them with a “unique” yeast, and then adds Northern Brewer, Saaz, and Styrian Goldings hops. The result is a focused, almost sharp, golden ale you’ll love to death.

"Perpetual Potion"

Tröegs Perpetual IPA

Originally brewed last year to commemorate their new brewery in Hershey, PA, Tröegs’ Imperial Pale Ale is now part of their regular lineup. It features Bravo, Chinook, and Mt. Hood hops in the boil, Mt. Hood and Nugget in the hopback and Cascade and Nugget hops for dry-hopping. That’s a whole lotta’ hops hurling citrus and spicy notes at your taste buds. Keep ‘em coming, we say.

On Sale for 9.96 through 11/04/12

Regularly $11.49

"Plank You Very Much"

Heavy Seas Plank II 22 oz - $7.49

This is our first beer in a 22 oz bottle to be Beer of the Week. We got it at such a good deal -- and it’s such a good beer -- that we couldn’t resist. In their Heavy Seas Plank Series, Clipper City ages brews in non-standard woods. This plank is a Doppelbock style lager aged in eucalyptus and poplar barrels. It’s got a rich caramel taste with complex notes from the barrels. This plank is made for drinkin’!

"Dubbel Your Pleasure"

Clipper City Heavy Seas Dubbel Cannon - Regularly $9.99/6P

This beer from Clipper City Brewing Co. is one of the Baltimore, MD brewer’s variations on its award winning Loose Cannon. Here, they take the Loose Cannon - a generously hopped, citrusy, floral IPA - and brew it with the yeast you usually use for Belgian abbey ales. Dubbel yeast with Pale malt and with Simcoe, Centennial, Palisade, and Warrior hops offers a complex mix of carmelized malt and citrus spice. Get some on the dubbel!

"Alternate Brewstory"

Devil's Backbone Belgian Congo Pale Ale - Regularly $10.99/6P

This beer is the result of a little creative brewing and creative history. You know the story about how the British shipped heavily hopped pale ales to India for their troops creating the India Pale Ale? Well, Devils Backbone asks, what if the Belgians had stayed in the Congo? Their answer is this Belgian IPA (or BCPA). Piney and citrusy hops swirl atop a mild Belgian golden ale base. (No Congolese were harmed in the making!)

"Spring is Bursting Out"

Pyramid Outburst Imperial IPA - Regularly $9.99/6P

Most brewers kick out their double (or Imperial) IPAs in the winter, but Pyramid Brewing Company saved their hop monster for the early spring. As some wonder if corporate aquired Pyramid can still be called “craft beer,” Seattle’s finest springs into the season with this dry-hopped Nugget, Chinook, Centennial, and Simcoe hop (on top of Munich, 2-Row, Caramel, and Carared malts) big and unignorably tasty IPA.

"Summer Stylin’"

Anderson Valley Summer Solstice Cerveza Creama - Regularly $11.99/6P

It ain’t the style; it’s what you do with it. You might hear the phrase “cream ale” and think about brews that you buy cheap and get what you pay for. Excellent Boonville, CA brewers, Anderson Valley mess with the cream ale style by using toasted malts. What you get is a malty, smooth summer ale with pear and vanilla notes floating like a cooler in the James. Hey, that gives me an idea ...

"Brewing On Point"

Devil’s Backbone Eight Point IPA 6P - Regularly $9.99

Devil’s Backbone’s brewmaster, Jason Oliver was sitting on his porch, thinking up names for their beer when a couple of eight point bucks came wandering through his backyard. Thus, a beer was named. Though the brewery is in Nelson County, this IPA was styled off of those from the West Coast. Cascade, Colombus, Centennial, Chinook, and Simcoe hops all blend to make an agressive, citrusy/alpha acid shot. This time, eight is great!

"The Cannon Strikes Black"

Clipper City Heavy Seas Black Cannon 6P - Regularly $9.99

It may be premature to say the “Black IPA” style is here to stay, but it certainly hasn’t gone away yet. Back after its initial release last year is Heavy Seas’ Black Cannon - Black IPA. The Baltimore brewers take Black Wheat, Pale, Caramel, and Munich malts and bitter  them with Warrior, Simcoe, and Palisade hops. It’s like Heavy Seas’ Loose Cannon after having gone over to the Dark Side! Floral, piney hops mix with roasty malt. You may not go back.
